Puncontrollable participated in the Edible Books Festival for the third time this year. We have been so busy lately, we almost weren't able to do it, but we sure are glad we did! You may remember some of our past entries from 2009 and 2010.

Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! We are definitely concerned about the environment, and that's why most of our designs are printed on upcycled items and many of our designs are nature-oriented. I think Mother Earth must love puns too, there are just so many great puns with animals, plants, geology.... What kinds of nature puns can you "unearth" today?

Edible Book Festival Report

Last week we participated in the Seattle Edible books Festival. It was a ton of fun. We went a little overboard and made five entries (Ernest Hamingway is above). Our entry "Little Hows on the Pear E" won the silver award in the "Most Pun-derful" category!

We had a lot of fun perfecting and eating our "Don Quiche-ote" entry, yum! All in all, the event was a success. Seeing all of the other entries was really inspiring. There were so many clever ideas and yummy-looking creations. There was even an "Origin of the Reese's"--our personal favorite since we have a weakness for peanut butter and chocolate.

Seattle Edible Book Festival

We sure are looking forward to this year's Seattle Edible Books Festival! We had a ton of fun last year and they were nice enough to feature our Wilde design on the promo postcards. We have at least a dozen ideas for possible submissions, the hard part will be narrowing it down to a few. Here's the post of our experience last year. If you're in the area, you should join us on April 10th! If you want to enter, you need to sign up by the 8th. Hope to see you there!

Well, we're back! We've had an amazing past few months and now we're refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to get back to work/fun. We're really looking forward to the holidays, but they go by so quickly! Our latest pun award goes out to the lovely Jenny Jimenez. On top of being an all-around great person, she is also an amazing photographer. We have to admit that we are a little biased since she is doing our wedding photography. When we heard about the name of her upcoming show "Show Me Your Tiffs," we knew we had to give her a pun award.

Her show is running now through December 12th at the Skylark Cafe in Seattle. Check it out!

Hi Everyone,

You may have noticed it's been quite some time since we have posted. Sorry! The two people that comprise puncontrollable, Margaret and Cyrus, have been busy preparing for their upcoming wedding. Postings will be scarce until we return from our honeymoon. Just because we haven't been posting, doesn't meant that our lives have been without puns. Here are a few highlights:

- We took a road trip to Portland, OR and have decided they are the punniest city we've seen. There were so many clever puns, everywhere.

-Margaret received a couple of amazing books on puns for her birthday from our dear friend Nate. We plan to review and share from the books in upcoming posts.

-We've come up with a few new designs that we hope to debut in time for the winter holidays. We also will start making and selling prints of our designs.

There are lots of exciting things coming up!

Today I was really tired when I woke up, so I decided I'd go get some coffee. I walked to the local coffeeshop, Lighthouse Roasters in Fremont (Seattle), and ordered a soy latte. When the cashier relayed my order to the barista, they said "Soy-tainly"! Apparently barista Lisa is the originator of this expression, so I had to give her a pun award. Thanks Lisa, you "soy-tainly" made my day!

Frock Yeah!

Congratulations Frock Shop!

I stopped by the Frock Shop the other day to get my cute dress fix, and I came across these shirts. I laughed, I took a picture, and I gave them a pun award. Apparently, the owner of the shop designed the shirts and has a history of making punny designs. I love the pun and the idea that if you've got this shirt on, you definitely will have your "frock off." Great job!

This lovely visual pun was found in Seattle at the Punk Rock Flea Market. We were on our way out the door when we spotted it, and we just had to turn around and give out a pun award. The award winner is Betsy Schairer of Baddins Design. Betsy also makes some lovely embroidery drawings that are showing now at Dolce Vita in Ballard, curated by ghostgallery.

Betsy was a very gracious award-winner, she even gave an acceptance speech! She explained to us her process in conceptualizing the "Miss Prints" image--she just came up with the idea the night before. Thanks for the laugh and smarts, Betsy!

Also while out of town, we spotted this home-made pun on the back of a car: "I go where I'm towed." We used to have a car like that... Wish we could've given them a pun award, but the owner was nowhere in site and we were without our awards. So this would qualify as a pun award honorable mention.

While out and about on a weekend in Astoria, OR, we spotted this gem. We promptly ran across the street and presented the owner with a pun award. We also appreciate his business model--or should we say Mallternative?

Our second Pun Award goes to Un Phở Gettable. Seattle sure loves itself some phở, and why shouldn't we? It's fast. It's cheap. It's served in giant bowls. And, well, it's phở-cking everywhere. So, when Margaret and I were struck with sudden hunger while on our way to hit the great north Aurora thrift shop circuit this weekend, we couldn't resist stopping in to grab some Vietnamese cuisine and hand a Punny to the proprietors of Un Phở Gettable, clearly our favorite Seattle phở restaurant name. It was a slow Saturday afternoon when we arrived at the Greenwood Ave and Holman Rd strip mall establishment. So, we took a moment to hand the proprietor their award, describe what it is Puncontrollable does and praise them on the excellent choice of business name before ordering our food. Thanks, Un Phở Gettable, for making us smile every time we pass by. Here's Margaret enjoying her teriyaki. Yum!

Oh those punny 20's! I recently realized that the sheet music we have hanging in our house has a nice little pun on it. The music company that published the sheet music was called the Milton Weil Music Company, hence the "Worth Weil Song." The sheet music was for the song "Sweethearts on Parade" ( a song that M. Ward covered, which we love).

This made me think about the puns that we are surrounded by every day. As I'm sure you know, puns are a popular marketing and advertising tool. Are you more likely to use a product or service that uses a pun? I don't know if I am, but I am more likely to laugh. Do you have a favorite pun around the house? Send it in! I also noticed this one on a wine bottle--"Our Daily Red."

Our dear friend alerted us to the fact that there is a "Pun Off" held ever year in Austin, TX. We will go--someday. Until then, we will just dream and give out our own pun awards. If you've seen a good pun around town and would like to nominate it, just let us know!

Congratulations Elephants Gerald!

This is a shop whose name has made me giggle ever since I first laid eyes upon it. Elephants Gerald makes screen printed tshirts, too--even better! The thing that I like about this store, almost as much as their name--their posted "hours: flexible." We like how they think!

I met with John Ramm, the founder (pictured above), when I stopped by to give them their award. He happily hung the award in the window and gave me these neat stickers. Tired of the hearts on people's bumperstickers? Replace them with a screw!

Seattle Edible Book Fest

Puncontrollable took its first stab at the culinary arts yesterday at the Seattle Edible Book Festival.

Our entries were: "Curd Vonnegut" (featuring Beecher's cheese curds and a cocoa stenciled Kurt)

and "Wilde About Reading" (featuring a chocolate sauce screen printed pancake).

We had a bunch of fun and we are already thinking up entry ideas for next year!
